Homework will be assigned approximately every two weeks to help you learn to express your knowledge of physical concepts concisely and accurately (as you will be required to do on the exams). The homework problems (like the exam problems) will mainly be in the form of short essays (a few paragraphs), and will occassionally involve simple calculations. Diagrams are encouraged (especially on the exams) as they provide a good way to summarize your knowledge.

Completed homework assignments must be submitted by the due date using the Assignments link in OnCourse. Click here for some tips on successfully submitting your homework. Homework problems will be graded based on effort - i.e. a correct answer is not required, but some indication that you seriously thought about the question is. Each problem will be worth 1 point.

Tips for Successfully Submitting Your Homework

  1. You are responsible for submitting your homework before the deadline. If you encounter any difficulties, please ask for help immediately. Do not wait until after the assignment is due to tell Prof. Evans that you weren't able to submit.
You can get help from the following sources. The best strategy is to contact help services directly after you see a problem.

    • UITS Bloomington support hotline: 812-855-2789 (24/7).

    • "Help" tab in Oncourse

    • Always inform Prof. Evans (by email) if you experience problems

  2. Do not press the "Submit" button until you have completed the assignment. You will not be allowed to re-submit your work.
Once you have pressed the "Submit" button, you will be returned to the list of assignments page. If this does not happen, there is a problem. Contact UITS and Prof. Evans.

  3. The preferred way of submitting your homework is as an attachment. This allows you to work on the problems on your own computer without having to worry about Oncourse going down.
Adding attachments to your assignment in Oncourse is a 4-step process:

    1. Click on "Add Attachments" and browse for the file you want to attach

    2. When you have found your file, click "Continue"

    3. Finally, click "Finish" to acutally attach the file

    4. You may now "Submit" your homework.

Acceptable formats for attachments are: Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer, Portable Document Format (.pdf), or plan text (.txt).

  4. If you need to enter your work directly into the Oncourse text box, be sure to click the "Save" button often so that your work is not lost in case of loss of connection, server crash, etc.

  5. Mac users: the Safari web browser sometimes has problems with OnCourse. You may not be able to attach files to your assignment. If you need to do this, try using the Firefox browser.
